Join Jewish Federation of St. Louis for the next event in the Sh’ma: Listen! Speaker Series on Wednesday, February 3 at 7:00 pm with Dr. Joshua Holo.

Dr. Joshua Holo will be exploring the Golden Age of Jewish Spain in a lecture, “What’s So Golden?” We’ve all heard about the grandeur of the Golden Age of Jewish Spain, but where does the mystique come from? Emerging from a complicated and often contentious world of religious communities and ideas, this Golden Age produced some of our greatest Jewish philosophers, writers, poets, scientists and physicians, who have shaped our history so indelibly. Dr. Holo will explore this era and its far-reaching impact.

Since 2010, Dr. Holo has served as Dean and Associate Professor of Jewish History at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Jack H. Skirball Campus in Los Angeles. Prior to his deanship, Dr. Holo directed the Louchheim School of Judaic Studies, through which HUC-JIR serves as the Jewish Studies Program for its neighbor and partner institution, the University of Southern California. Dr. Holo’s publications focus on Medieval Jews of the Mediterranean, particularly in the Christian realm. His book, Byzantine Jewry in the Mediterranean Economy, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2009. Dr. Holo’s teaching spans the Bible and medieval Jewish history as literature, particularly the great Biblical commentators.

The event will take place at Jewish Federation of St. Louis Kopolow Building. For further information or to RSVP, please contact Barbara Levin at BLevin@JFedSTL.org or 314-442-3752.
