The evolution of Israel’s political scene helps explain the significant pivot in national priorities away from Israel’s key socioeconomic infrastructures such as education, transportation, and health. Shoresh study findings peel away conventional explanations by showing that government civilian expenditures (that is, excluding military spending) were above or equal to the average OECD government civilian expenditures during the four decades in which the massive changes in Israel’s infrastructures occurred. Ben-David analyses the outcomes and implications of this year’s Israeli elections from a long term perspective.

About the Speaker

Professor (Ph.D. in Economics, University of Chicago) founded and heads the Shoresh Institution for Socioeconomic Research and is a senior faculty member at Tel-Aviv University. Professor Ben-David was named “Person of the Year” by the Calcalist newspaper and was twice included among the 100 most influential people in Israel by the Haaretz-The Marker newspaper.

The Shoresh Institution is the only organization in Israel whose sole raison d’être is its focus on the long-run existential threats to the country. Shoresh’s distinctive ability to present its exceptional evidence-based analyses in clear and accessible language has earned it broad public respect and trust from all sectors of the Israeli government and society.
