Mohamed is a native of Akko. He has an extraordinary personal story in which Israeli and American Jewish philanthropy played a huge role in shaping his path and that of his family, prompting him to devote his life and work to helping others – Arab and Jewish – and promoting harmony between the communities. A summer job he had as a boy at a neighboring Kibbutz ended up providing weekly surplus of food to his family, which in turn enabled them to send two older daughters to study. He also (secretly) joined the Zionist Tsofim. He went to study in the US where he worked for a Jewish philanthropist in Houston, who further helped him and his family. When he returned to Israel, he decided to open a community center to support Akko’s struggling families, both Jewish and Arab, which he still does to this day.
