Dr. Erin Bakanas, with Washington University’s Division of Palliative Medicine, talks about these issues as well as ethical difficulties that sometimes arise when families need to make hard decisions about treatments such as resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, and artificial nutrition and hydration – while still respecting a patients’ desires.
