State Representative George Hruza Leads Holocaust Remembrance Recognition in Missouri State House Chamber

A moment of silence marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau

ST. LOUIS (January 29, 2025) – On Holocaust Remembrance Day (Jan. 27), State Representative George J. Hruza, MD, MBA, delivered a powerful speech in the Missouri State House Chamber, marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The legislature stood for a moment of silence to honor the six million Jews and other innocent victims murdered by the Nazi regime, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring history is never forgotten.

Dr. Hruza shared his family’s painful history, including his mother’s survival of the Holocaust. At 19, she endured a brutal march from Hungary to Austria before being imprisoned at Mauthausen concentration camp. Two of Dr. Hruza’s grandparents and three great-grandparents were murdered in Auschwitz, with one dying in a cattle car on the way.

“The Nazis perfected murder on an industrial scale,” Dr. Hruza said. “January 27 is a commemoration of the six million innocent souls taken from us, but also a celebration of the human spirit of the survivors who endured and thrived against impossible odds.”

He also emphasized the urgency of remembrance in light of the October 7 massacre, stressing that Never Again is not just a phrase — it’s a call for vigilance. Following his speech, many legislators expressed their shared commitment to combating antisemitism and preserving the lessons of history.

A recording of Dr. Hruza’s speech is available here (remarks begin at 4:04:40).
