Jewish Opportunities & Learning for Teens (JOLT) has announced their course description for Trimester 2 of their engaging classes for Jewish teens.

Second Trimester begins on November 12 and is open to all St. Louis Jewish teens in grades 8-12.

Trimester 2—1st  Hour

  • Brush Up Your Hebrew with Efi Shviro
    Develop conversational Hebrew skills and build a vocabulary of practical words that can be used for a visit to Israel.
  • Jews “R” News with Bob Cohn
    News is coming at us constantly in many forms. What is reliable and what is not? Discuss current events with a Jewish lens.
  • Texting with the Rabbis with Rotating Rabbis
    Meet and learn with a variety of Community and Congregational Rabbis as they share their passion for classic text from our traditions.
  • Teens Take Action with Andy Schwebel
    “Take Action” through experiential service learning while gaining insight into the importance of Tikun Olam. Help plan and implement community service projects. Earn community service hours.

 

Trimester 2—2nd Hour

  • From Sullivan to Seinfeld: How Television Shaped Jewish Identity with Brad Chotiner
    Using clips and whole episodes of various TV shows, we will explore how TV has help to shape Jewish identity. Watch a show, discuss the overt and hidden meaning, and decide together how each show and its characters have impacted Jewish culture.
  • Israel Through Cinema with Andy Schwebel
    Explore the diversity of Israeli society through the educational portal of films.
  • Strong Girls, Healthy Relationships with Nava Kantor
    Designed for 8th–9th grade girls, this interactive class will explore empowerment and self-esteem in healthy relationships.
  • Tough Jews & the Mafia with Golda Cohen

Learn what Chicago, Detroit, Las Vegas, New York City and even St. Louis have in common with Jewish history and the mob.

All classes take place on Thursday evenings at Congregation B’nai Amoon, 324 S. Mason Road, 63141. Second Trimester dates are as follows: Nov. 12, 19; Dec. 3, 10; Jan, 7, 14, 21, 28.

If there is a subject that interest you and is not listed, JOLT will create a class for a minimum of eight students. For busy teens coming from another activity or who want to arrive early and socialize, JOLT offers a dinner option from 6:00 pm–6:30 pm.
