Organizer(s): Mirowitz Center (email)
Tue, March 10, 2026
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Mirowitz Center (directions)

This three-part program about the world’s most powerful and puzzling machine — the human brain — is presented by Richard Gavatin, M.Sc., a pharmacist, neuroscience enthusiast, and the initiator/co-chair of Kol Rinah congregation’s Judaism & Science series. Gain new insights into how our brains make sense of the world around us, from billions of neurons constantly firing to the mysteries of memory, recognition, and reading. These Mirowitz Center sessions offer lively explanations, surprising facts, and plenty of “aha” moments! Register for each session individually; prior attendance not required.

“Neurons: Why So Many?” (free & in person)
Tuesday 3/10/2026 2 to 3 PM (Part 1 of 3)
A fascinating journey inside your brain’s vast network of 100 billion neurons — including the mysterious “Jennifer Aniston neuron” (you’ll have to attend the program to learn what that is!). Discover how your brain transforms electrical signals into vision, recognition, and memory. Never look at a face, a thought, or even a spark of inspiration the same way again.

“All About Memory: Forget About It!”
Tuesday 3/17/2026 2 to 3 PM (Part 2 of 3)
Why do we forget so much more than we remember — and why is that actually a good thing? In this session, you’ll hear how each brain decides what to keep, what to toss, and why forgetting is essential to learning and creativity. Richard also offers a brief, accessible look at what happens when memory falters.

“How Come We Can Read?”
Tuesday 3/24/2026 2 to 3 PM (Part 3 of 3)
Ever wonder how a jumble of ink blots on paper (or pixels on a screen) turns into meaning, emotion, and story? Explore the extraordinary network of neurons that allows us to read — from letter recognition to comprehension. You’ll have a new appreciation for how effortlessly your brain performs one of humanity’s most remarkable feats.
