Arab citizens make up more than 20% of Israel’s population, yet are underrepresented in most advanced societal and economic spheres. Closing gaps between Jewish and Arab citizens has become a national priority for Israel’s economic strength as a whole, with numerous efforts underway to increase Arab participation in higher education and the workforce. What are the major barriers to a more equal and shared society in Israel today? What are the realities and visions of Arab citizens seeking to be part of Israel’s mainstream?

Join us for a “behind the headlines” discussion with Nasreen Hadad Haj-Yahya, Director of the Jewish-Arab Relations Program at the Israel Democracy Institute. As an Arab woman from the mixed city of Ramle, Nasreen has broken numerous social and cultural barriers to become one of the leading civil society figures working to develop Arab leadership and opportunities for deeper Jewish-Arab understanding and cooperation.

Nasreen is the Director of the Arab-Jewish Relations Program at the Israel Democracy Institute. Areas of expertise include the socioeconomic profile of young Arab men and women; the integration of Arabs into higher education and the job market; proper representation of Arabs in the civil service; and decision-making processes.

Registration preferred; walk-ins welcome. For additional information, contact Kathy Schmeltz at KSchmeltz@JFedSTL.org or 314-442-3761.
