Engaging Millennials in Jewish Life with Aliza Kline, M.P.A.

Aliza Kline is a dynamic leader and social entrepreneur. She is the co-founder and CEO of OneTable, empowering young adults to become producers of Jewish life by hosting (and guesting!) Shabbat dinners that feel authentic, sustainable, and valuable. Aliza was also the founding executive director of Mayyim Hayyim Community Mikveh and Education Center, an international model for re-imaging Jewish ritual open to the full diversity of the Jewish community. A trained coach and design thinking facilitator, Aliza works with clients throughout North America and Israel. She has a B.A. from WashU and an M.P.A. from NYU. She joins us from Brooklyn, N.Y., to discuss the vision and impact of OneTable across the U.S., and their latest project, “Shabbat Alone, Together.”

 

Creating a Movement: Harnessing the Power of Women Leaders with Sheila Katz, M.S.

Sheila Katz is the CEO of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), a network of 90,000 members and supporters across the U.S. who are living out their Jewish values and turning their progressive ideals into action. Sheila most recently served as Hillel International’s vice president for student engagement and leadership. During her 12 years at Hillel, Sheila engaged Jewish students and professionals around the world through programs including “Ask Big Questions,” a national initiative she co-founded and directed, which helps guide students through conversations to help them understand themselves and others. She also spearheaded MitzVote, Hillel’s non-partisan civic engagement campaign that helped 19,000 students register to vote or request absentee ballots leading up to the 2018 midterm elections. In 2014, Sheila was appointed by the White House to committees advising President Obama on higher education and women’s rights. She is a longtime advocate for equal pay and mentors young women on the issue. In addition, she is an activist fighting for inclusion for people with disabilities. Sheila is currently on the executive committee of a national coalition of over 100 Jewish organizations working to promote safety, respect, and equity in Jewish communal spaces. She holds an M.S. in teaching from Pace University and B.A. in politics from Ithaca College. She is a proud alumna of the Wexner Foundation Field Fellowship and Teach for America. Sheila was named as one of 2019’s 50 most influential Jews in the United States by the Forward. She joins us from Washington, D.C.

 

Public and Personal Conversations about Diversity: Creating Stronger Communities with Gamal Palmer, M.F.A.

Gamal Palmer is Senior Vice President of Leadership Development for the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles and seen as a master mentor, coach, and facilitator. What gives Gamal a competitive edge are his deep connections and relationships to the diverse identity markers that make him who he is. He has worked to build bridges through the power of storytelling and has traveled the world, as he continues to learn and teach about leadership, diversity, and entrepreneurship. Gamal has a M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama, where he also took courses at the Yale School of Management. He trains young adults to be effective board and committee members of Jewish non-profits, and other social initiatives in Los Angeles. Gamal is also the Founder and CEO of Global Eye Entrepreneurs, an initiative creating a multi-cultural network where male entrepreneurs of color are provided with rigorous leadership and business development, mentorship. Gamal joins us from Los Angeles.

 

Reflections on Professional Leadership with Andrew Rehfeld, Ph.D.

Andrew Rehfeld is the 10th President of Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR). A leading political scientist and distinguished Jewish communal leader, Andrew’s career has bridged both the academic and professional worlds, including 18 years in St. Louis as Associate Professor of Political Science at WashU and as President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis. Andrew leads the four-campus international institution of Jewish higher education and seminary for Reform Judaism, which educates leaders to serve the Reform Movement and the Jewish people worldwide as rabbis, cantors, educators, and nonprofit professionals. Representing the largest Jewish denomination in North America and the growing Progressive Movement in Israel and around the world with 4,000 active alumni serving nearly 900 congregations and 1.5 million members. Andrew joins us from New York.
