What are people hearing when we speak? To truly identify with a message, we need to be able to see ourselves reflected in the words being spoken. Researchers are finding more than ever that language is not about making statements and observations, but about connecting and checking on other people’s states of mind. Increase your awareness of the skills which facilitate communication, both verbally and in print, in a way that embraces your listener. John McWhorter, Ph.D., is a linguistics professor at Columbia University and has written numerous books on language and race. His TED Talk, “Txtng is Killing Language,” has been viewed by over 1.5 million people.

JProStl is a professional association for staff who work in 50+ nonprofit organizations within the St. Louis Jewish community. JProStl is affiliated with Jewish Federation of St. Louis’ Millstone Institute.
