Fighting Bigotry & Hatred: Grace Bumbry In Her Own Words (free & in person)
After growing up in segregated St. Louis, opera singer Grace Bumbry made a breakthrough in Germany in the landmark role of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Two years later, the 25-year-old not only made her Carnegie Hall debut, but also was invited by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to sing at a White House state dinner. Join Diane McCullough, Opera Theatre of St. Louis Guild docent, and learn how Ms. Bumbry transcended racial perceptions and vocal categorizations, as she mastered both mezzo-soprano and soprano roles. No cost to register, but RSVP required.
Presented in recognition of Black History Month and as part of Mirowitz Center’s “Fighting Bigotry & Hatred” series. Co-sponsored by ADL Heartland, the American Jewish Committee, Jewish Community Relations Council of St. Louis, National Council of Jewish Women St. Louis, and St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum.
