When Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised annexation of the West Bank during Israel’s election campaign last month, tension in the region reached a new high. Here in the US, it can be difficult to understand the situation on the ground. That’s why J Street is proud to partner with the New Israel Fund to bring former IDF soldiers to share their experiences.

Breaking the Silence is an organization of veteran soldiers who have served in the military since the start of the Second Intifada and have taken it upon themselves to expose the Israeli public to the reality of everyday life in the West Bank and Gaza. They endeavor to stimulate public debate about the price paid for a reality in which young soldiers face a civilian population on a daily basis and are engaged in the control of that population’s everyday life. Their work aims to bring an end to the conflict.
For the first time, Breaking the Silence is bringing US-raised former “lone soldiers” to share their experiences with the American Jewish community. The speakers were all raised in the US before deciding to move to Israel and enlisting in the IDF. They come from Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox backgrounds and served within the last decade. Through a moderated panel and audience Q&A, they will share their unique perspective as both American Jews and former Israeli soldiers.
