SUMMARY:Young Israel Cholent Cook Off
DESCRIPTION:The Young Israel of St. Louis Cholent Cookoff is a community-building event centered around one of the great Ashkenazi Jewish comfort foods: cholent\, the slow-cooked Shabbat stew traditionally prepared before Shabbat and enjoyed for lunch on Saturday.\nIt brings together members of the Young Israel community to share their own cholent recipes\, compete for bragging rights\, and enjoy good food and camaraderie. From traditional meat-and-bean cholent to creative variations with different spices\, ingredients\, and cooking techniques\, each entry offers a taste of the cook’s personal approach to this Shabbat staple.\nMore than just a food competition\, the cookoff celebrates Jewish tradition\, the warmth of Shabbat\, and the community spirit that makes Young Israel special.\nYoung Israel’s past cookoff announcements have invited attendees to sample every cholent and vote for their favorite\, with a lineup of community members and rabbis serving as chefs. There is a $5 admission fee with sponsorship opportunities available.

SUMMARY:I Saw Visions of God: A History of Jewish Apocalypticism & Mysticism
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Scholar David Armstrong \n\n\n\nJourney into mystery! Dreams\, visions\, sudden epiphanies\, altered states of consciousness: sometimes\, people have experiences they cannot fully explain\, in which they feel they receive special knowledge about God\, heaven\, the universe\, the afterlife\, and the future. Sometimes they even go looking for them: we want to know how it all works\, that it’s all going to be okay\, and that intimacy with the divine is possible\, especially when we suffer. We describe these states\, and the literature written to encode them\, with the terms “apocalypticism” and “mysticism.” Both have had a huge influence on the Abrahamic religions in general and the history of Judaism in particular. In this class\, we’ll explore the history of apocalyptic and mystical texts\, ideas\, worldviews\, communities\, and sentiments from antiquity to the present. \n\n\n\nRegistration required.
