The Internship Experience for Future Community Leaders  connects students with employment and the local Jewish community

Jewish Federation of St. Louis has launched its second year of a unique summer internship program that combines meaningful employment and a community connection experience for students who either live or study in St. Louis. 14 interns have been selected for The Internship Experience for Future Community Leaders; an nine-week paid summer opportunity that will provide employment at a local business or non-profit organization, a community mentor and opportunities for students to engage with the local Jewish community as part of a special cohort.

The 2016 Interns are:

  • Heather Alton is a rising Senior at Loyola University studying Women & Gender studies.  Heather will be working at the St. Louis Chapter of The National Council of Jewish Women with Executive Director, Ellen Alper. The National Council of Jewish Women is a volunteer organization that has been at the forefront of social change for over a century — championing the needs of women, children, and families — while courageously taking a progressive stance on such issues as child welfare, women’s rights, and reproductive freedom.
  • Torri Lawrence is a rising Junior at University of Missouri studying Business Administration.  Torri will be working at Sweetology with owner and entrepreneur Kara Newmark.  Torri will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of running and operating a business while pursuing her dream to one day open her own bakery.  Sweetology is a canvas for creativity that allows people of all ages to decorate one-of-a-kind confections in their workshop.
  • Eli Scher-Zagier is a rising Junior at Washington University in St. Louis studying Economics, Political Science, and Finance. Eli will be working at Fox Rodney Search and will be focusing on a variety of research and strategy development projects for the organization. Fox Rodney Search is a global legal recruitment boutique focusing on partner and associate searches and team moves as well as general counsel and head of legal in-house searches.
  • Sarah Burack is a rising Junior at Washington University in St. Louis studying Global Health and Environment.  Sarah will be working at The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital and will be participating in a series of mini-internships as she learns about the Foundation, outreach, donor relations and community needs. The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital serves as the connection between Barnes-Jewish Hospital and their generous donors.  The Foundation raises funds to support Barnes-Jewish Hospital, its mission and its affiliates, including Siteman Cancer Center, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital and Goldfarb School of Nursing.
  • Ellie Pinto is a rising Junior at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY studying Economics with minors in Anthropology and Sociology. Ellie will be working at Warehouse of Fixtures and will be focusing on reviewing consumer data to better understand what makes customers more likely to make a purchase. Warehouse of Fixtures sells new and pre-owned office furniture to both businesses and consumers.
  • Jessica Sikora is a rising Senior at University of Missouri studying Communications.  Jessica will be working at B’nai Amoona Congregation this summer as a senior staff member at Camp Ramot Amoona.  Jessica will be managing all of the outbound communications including the website, videos, and social media. Camp Ramot Amoona is open to students in Kindergarten through 6th
  • Andrew Holtzman is a rising Senior at Washington University in St. Louis studying Mathematics and Economics. Andrew will be working at TechArtista with Managing Partners & Founders Chris Holt & Eric Hamblett on a variety of projects in the finance and economics realm as they work to grow, measure and share the impact of their organization. TechArtista is collaborative co-working space for innovators, students and business professionals.
  • Brian Gersten is a rising Junior at Washington University in St. Louis studying Chemical Engineering.  Brian will be working at DEMA Engineering this summer on a variety of processes and lab work. DEMA is a leading supplier of chemical dispensing systems, fluid control devices and industrial solenoid valves, strainers, pumps and injectors for virtually any industrial, institutional and professional market.
  • Sarah Goodman is a rising Senior at Bradley University studying Psychology and Sociology.  Sarah will be working at Cooperative Home Care this summer in their human resources department.  Cooperative Home Care brings healthcare to homes focusing on skilled nursing, therapy, and in-home care.
  • Jamie Goodman is a rising Junior at University of Missouri studying Broadcast Journalism. Jamie will be working at Cooperative Home Care this summer in their marketing department focusing on Social Media engagement, blog development and copy writing.  Cooperative Home Care brings healthcare to homes focusing on skilled nursing, therapy, and in-home care.
  • Isaiah Elder is a rising Junior at Washington University in St. Louis studying Leadership & Strategic Management and Environmental Policy. Isaiah will be working for Zoltek as a part of their finance team. Zoltek Companies, Inc. engages in the development, manufacture, and marketing of carbon fiber for various applications.
  • Jacob Maier is a rising Junior at Tulane University studying Political Science. Jacob will be working at Missouri Jobs with Justice and will take leadership in organizing Labor in the Pulpits, a state-wide day focused on celebrating the sacredness of work and continuing the push for greater workers’ rights. Jobs with Justice is an action-oriented organization focused on fighting for economic and social justice as it relates to workers’ rights.
  • Jacob Honigman is a rising Junior at Washington University in St. Louis studying History.  Jacob will be working at Cultural Leadership and focusing on their 2016 Camp Cultural Leadership that introduces social justice concepts and ties them to leadership skills. Cultural Leadership exists to create a more just and equitable community by educating middle school and high school students to recognize and resolve issues of privilege and injustice through the lens of the African American and Jewish experience. Their students develop leadership skills, build relationships, facilitate dialogues and create change in their circles of influence.
  • Elexa Salina is a rising Junior at Washington University in St. Louis studying Marketing and Organizational Behavior. Elexa will be working at Horizon in their Global Marketing department. Horizon is a fully integrated life science company that provides enabling products, services and research programs to clients engaged at every stage of the healthcare continuum from sequence to treatment.

In addition to the internship, each student will be paired with a mentor in the community who will help guide them throughout the internship experience. Finally, all participants will engage in a series of leadership development sessions to help hone skills in areas such as networking, communication, leadership styles and more.
