The next film in the 2018 Sandra and Mendel Rosenberg Sunday Afternoon Film Series will be Shanghai Ghetto, screening at 1 pm on July 29 in the Holocaust Museum & Learning Center Theater at 12 Millstone Campus Drive. Films in this Sunday series are free and open to the public.

Narrated by Academy Award-winner Martin Landau, this documentary records the story of thousands of Jews who sought refuge in Japanese-controlled Shanghai in the late 1930s. Survivors described how they formed a community in the exotic city, penniless and unprepared for their new lives in the Far East. This 2002 film, directed by Dana Janklowicz-Mann and Amir Mannis, is mostly in English with some subtitles and has a running time of 95 minutes.

Introductory remarks and post-screening discussion are facilitated by Rabbi Yosef Landa, Regional Director of Chabad of Greater St. Louis. Rabbi Landa’s father escaped to Shanghai in order to survive the Holocaust.
