“Praying with Lior” Screening and Disability Resource Fair

In an effort to educate, engage and bring together individuals with disabilities and their families, Jewish Federation of St. Louis’ Jewish Community Inclusion Initiative and the St. Louis Jewish Film Festival will hold a film screening and Jewish resource fair on Sunday, February 16 at the Galleria 6 Cinema. The fair, featuring Jewish agencies that offer programs for disabilities, will start at 1 pm. At 2 pm, Praying with Lior will be shown in the theater. A discussion will follow the screening. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children under 18. The event coincides with national Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month and North American Inclusion Month.
The documentary follows Lior Liebling, a boy with special needs who is known as “the little rebbe,” as he approaches his bar mitzvah ceremony. The film raises questions about how people with disabilities are perceived and received by faith communities.
The film and resource fair is the first event for the Inclusion Initiative, which has a mission to promote full participation in Jewish life for individuals with disabilities and their families by enhancing inclusion, providing resources and collaborating with existing services in the St. Louis community. “As the parent of a child with autism spectrum disorder, I know how important a sense of community is for my family,” says Betty Berger. “Belonging to an inclusive Jewish community for every aspect of my son’s life is crucial for our peace of mind. Bringing that community together to watch an uplifting film is a positive way to highlight special needs and create a safe environment to talk about the issues at hand.”
