The following poem was written by Hilda Lebedun and shared as part of the Memory Project.

Devastating earthquakes,
Lost lives,
Suffering of the hurt ones.
What tragic happenings!

Quakes disturb the oceans
With strong, angry waters,
Sweeping away everything they touch.

Even the birds above
Fly away from the sight.
We humans are powerless
To stop the devastation,
People running, screaming in fear.
Where is there safety
When the earth moves under their feet?

In sadness we watch
The pictures on cable T.V.
We hope the earth—deep, deep below—
Will stop grinding somehow
So fear can be eased
For a calmer tomorrow.
